DEVELOPMENT KEYNOTES

TECHNOLOGIES

Sea of Thieves uses a unique suite of tools complementing Unreal Engine for the UI implementation. The biggest challenge was learning the flows and methods used throughout the game to be able to assist the team of front-end developers. One of these tools, Coherent Gameface, involved me learning TypeScript in a relatively short period to be able to understand the game architecture. My knowledge of C++ and ability to decipher the codebase relatively quickly allowed me to write a handbook for future team members, helping the team expand smoothly and onboard with ease.

WORKING ON A LIVE GAME

One of the most exciting yet terrifying aspects of this project was the game being live as we were developing it. Despite the gatekeeping tools to protect accidental leaks and/or bugs sliding into the live game, there was always the pressure of carefully checking each change before pushing it to the game. The was a great experience, seeing how the game expanded and the community reacting to changes almost on the same day of the submission.

GROWTH TIP

Rare Studio attended GDC in 2021 talking about the importance of automated testing and how it made the development much easier in long term. Check out their presentation below!
